About Glen

Glen Johnson was born outside Philadelphia and lived near Chicago as a child before his family settled in Andover, Mass.

He attended Lawrence University in Appleton, Wis., and began a nearly 30-year journalism career at the City News Bureau of Chicago. He returned to Massachusetts and reported for The Salem Evening News and Lowell Sun before joining The Associated Press in Boston.

He transferred to the AP’s Washington Bureau and later became a Washington correspondent for The Boston Globe. He subsequently moved back to Massachusetts and was working there when he joined the State Department in 2013.

Before joining the federal government, he covered five presidential campaigns, eight nominating conventions, and visited all 48 continental states.

He went to the last two - Alaska and Hawaii - during his four years working for the U.S. government as Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Strategic Communications.

In November 2020, he made an unexpected return to journalism as Politics Editor at Axios. He edited the company’s flagship political newsletter, Sneak Peek, and co-managed the political team.

In January 2023, he also had a second stint in public service. He established the communications office for newly elected Essex County (Mass.) District Attorney Paul Tucker before returning to self-employment.

Johnson developed his amateur cooking skills by staging in several famous restaurants, including Thomas Keller’s Bouchon and ad hoc in Yountville, Calif. He also studied at L’Academie de Cuisine in Gaithersburg, Md. He is active cookbook reader.

He also has had a lifelong interest in aviation and drew on it while serving as the AP’s National Transportation Writer.

In his spare time, he enjoys photography and strength-training.

Johnson lives outside Boston with his wife, Cathy, a real estate broker. The couple has two grown sons, a daughter-in-law, a new grandson - and a yellow Lab named Willow.
